Niya Ruins: Pompeii of the East

Buried in the sands of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, Niya Ruins has been a magnet for archeologists worldwide. It was the seat of an ancient kingdom dating back to 200 B.C. The relics unearthed here offered us many clues as to how people lived then and the kingdom's close communication with other cultures.

Travel tips:

Location: Located in the Taklamakan Desert, 120 kilometers from the nearest city

Transportation: No public transportation. Self-drive recommended

Attractions: the Niya Ruins and the Taklamakan Desert
